The Sweet Double Delight….
January 15, 2009
Now…..this particular one was suggested by your’s truely. The idea just came up when I saw the two ingredients ona small plate. So Aunty Midah rolled out the dough and put BOTH the Kaya paste and the Red Bean paste side by side. It already looks delicious!
After rolling in the Kaya and Red Bean paste Aunty Midah got up and went to the fridge again. She cracked one egg and mixed it both. It’s another type of glaze. What?!?! Even the glazing is different?!?! I’m no expert, I only know how to eat. But earlier one there’s already a home made one and it’s right there on the table. Aunty Midah has been doing this for 20 plus years as a hobby. So I’m not going to argue with her.
Bank at the round marble table, she run the knife through the top of the dough a few times to give tasters a clue of what’s inside. Then the glazing ceremony begins!
After which, she sprinkled a type of what she called sweet cereals on top. I personally never see this kind before but it’s nice. It’s very light, you don’t feel anything on your mouth with just one. You have to chew a spoonfull to notice it!
Next time, I’ll share about the Polo Bun with Blueberry Jam topping! So keep checking out this site for updates on the latest of Aunty Midah’s Pastry!
Pastry in the making
January 13, 2009
finally, I get to see the whole process from dough to pastry! I’m no expert, but those are a lot of ingredients on the round marble table that evening. Some 40gm dough and yeast and cheese and home made mayonaise and some eggs and home made coffee paste and carrots and kaya paste and red bean paste and some good ‘ol chilli sauce as well as blueberry jam!
Then Aunty Midah gets to work. I noticed that she arranged the ingredients in such a way that it’s all within reach. She mentioned that she likes to see all the ingrdients in place before rolling out the dough. So this is what it means by preparing it for you loved ones. You have to enjoy preparing it in the first place!
The first one…..
The rest….stay tuned for more….I’ll let your virtual taste buds do the drooling ;p
Some Mini Danish…
January 12, 2009
Here are some Mini Danish that Aunty Midah made for us to snack on. With a cup of Nescafe on the round marble table I asked her about her interests in making pastries.
“It’s simple.” She said. “I just love to make ’em as often as I could.” It’s alwasy a surprise every evening. Depends on what she’s got in her cabinet and fridge, she’ll go on to make different things everyday.
Mexican Polo Bun!
January 9, 2009
After the tasting event at the office, I went back to my aunt’s place to fetch my 4 month old son. She’s the nanny from now on. The moment when I got out of my car in front of her house immediate a familar smell hit my senses. COFFEE!
To my astonishment on the round marble table there they are. Freeshly baked and out of the oven, them Mexican Polo Buns….
Perfect…with a cup of coffee and polo buns with coffee toppings. This is the life…and for the record, I only had 2….as tasty as they were, I got sort of shy to go for more…when she’s looking that is!
Colourful Taste
January 9, 2009
So there, I brought a box load of homemade pastries to the office and invited some friends to try them. Tea time was the time. When everybody is starting to get tired and sleepy, I called them to get their coffee and got them to dig in.
I see happy faces. That’s gotta be a good sign. In general, food brings people together. But in this case, homemade pastries tickle their taste buds. My aunt was right! In every recipe the last ingredient is always a smile.
So feedback is good. Some even asked when they can start ordering. Some even really REALLY liked the taste. Just right and not too sweet. Maybe my aunt is watching her sugar intake so her taste suits the ‘right’ taste for everyone.
Some of these pastries I’ve never tried before myself! The bright colours and designs for each one always makes the guys want to take one of each. But my aunt is the only one making this and quality is her priority. I still remember when she said…
We must prepare as it is for our own loved ones.
So making in big quantities was never her intention.
The round marble table
January 7, 2009
The round marble table. That’s the table we use to eat our breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today after work I went to fetch my son there and saw she used the marble table that seats four adults as a working table with flour and sweet stuffings for her pastry.
She only had one type but more coming this evening. The actual baking in the oven would occur the next morning and I’m excited to smell that freshness on bread in the morning.
I’m getting a few photogs to shoot the pastry tomorrow, and see how good the pics come out. Will certainly share them here.
